To those that keep fancy goldfish, how do you get enough filtration without having the fish get stuck to the inlet pipe or get pushed around by the water movement from the filter. I know fancy goldfish are messy so I want to get the best filter for them.

I use potted plants in my barebottom goldfish tanks and the pots simply block the water flow which hits the bottom level. The strainers are blocked with cups. Still works well for me.:) I don't like the prefilter around it since it gets clogged by muck quickly.

Do you think the FX5 is too much?

You'd need 10x turnover rate for filters in goldfish tanks anyway. The only downside has always been the water flow but you can try to be innovative and do something to disperse the output flow a bit making it goldfish-safe for them. Can't you use spraybars?

That's what I did with my canister. Current was blowing fish around and I was worried about some of the smaller ones getting stuck to the intake. So I ditched the stock inlet/outlet, and made my own PVC ones. Intake is spread across 3 different entry points with a mesh net covering them. The outlet is a 12" PVC spray bar with probably 50+ 1/8" holes drilled in it. Not much in the way of powerful current generated when it's spread across a huge area and there is no chance for pressure to build up.
