this is a hypathetical question. if i had a tank, through cycling and then i did a 50% water change, would this cause a "mini cycle". ive read a lot of lit. that stated: (50% water changes are dangerous, aften causing a mini cycle. this is due to sress in ur bio-filter.) ive talked to local professionals and they say the same thing. ive read a lot of forums stating 50% to even a full 100% water change. this got me scratching my head. i can say that to me seemed like to much. opinions on this topic would be much appreciated, because ive been keeping fish for a number of years now, and am starting to branch into saltwater reef aquariums. needless too say, i do big tanks, and plan on doing everything "high-end". thanks

I can't say I have experience with SW. In my planted tank, I do 50% water changes on a weekly basis with absolutely no troubles. The only thing I do is make sure that the temperatures are equal. If such a water change would stress your fish, I can understand. Not everyone is blessed with quality water like mine. But, as to causing a mini-cycle, there is some other issue.

I've done a lot of large water changes with no problem also when you do your reef conider a fuge means less water changes no nitrates etc.... I would say over all depends on how long your tank has been established

As long a your water has been treated for chlorine or chloramines, and there is not a large temerature difference i see no way for a water change to "stress" your bio filter.

My weekly water changes vary from 25 to 60% for my different tanks, I test water params regularly before and after changes. I have never seen any adverse effects from water changes.

lol. i've been doing like 10-25 percent max water changes weekly!! ill try the 50% water changes and see what happens i guess, lol. thanks for the replies

I do 50% - 75% water changes on all my established tanks and have never had a problem with a mini-cycle.
I don't believe there's enough bacteria "free-floating" in the water to cause a shortage with a big water change.

The only issue I could imagine would be if the water wasn't treated prior to it being put into the tank, or that the parameters of the new water was very different than that of the tank water.

yeah i treat everything and depending on what tank im working on, ill match all parameters. i have a few tanks that dont bother me. small community lol. neways thanks for all the advise. i really do appreciate it!!
