Are there any cold water toothy california legal fish? Maybe something like the northern pikes, but legal?

I dont know your state laws but you really dont have much native+teeth. Are Gar and Bowfin legal there?

As far as what I know for California natives due to my own personal fishing knowledge, there is no fish in California water that are "toothy" that would be considered legal. The only "toothy" fish you can find in California is your local LFS. The only toothy fish in California water that I can think of is one the larger cutthroat trout where the teeth are starting to show out. Chinook aka King Salmon is one of the fish, but it is illegal to have possession of these species for the time being due to the fact that they are highly low in numbers as we(us fisherman) knows that salmon fishing has been closed since 07'. Get a chiller if your planning to get some toothy trout. :D

They would be considered as an invasive species in California much like the Northern Pike that destroyed the entire lake in Lake Davis a year or 2 back. California is a weird state money hogger...now stripe bass is being blamed for the decline of salmon population. People now a days will do anything for money. :screwy:

Ha, little salmon are to fast for them stripers. I am sure they get a few but stripers are more intested in large slower species such as shad. The main reason salmon numbers are low my guess would be people breaking the law and taking them in large quantitys in creeks and other areas where they spawn. If one person returns to the same creek for 5 years in a row keeping every salmon, there will be no more salmon in that creek.

Yeah unfortunately bowfins and gars r illegal, even though there r quite a few lfs that have florida, spotted and alligator gars. I have yet to c a bowfin or a northern pike at a lfs.
I think the salmon population has been greatly impacted by the rerouting and daming of alot of our waterways.

thats exactly whats happening .....we have way too many people that think that they own everything around them and show not a care to any of our fisheries or parks.....as for the stripers they are on a decline also ....i dont see how stripers are hurting the salmon pop if the stripers are becoming more and more rare outside of the river delta
