I'm trying to decide on some fish to add to my paludarium. Current inhabitants are 11 clown loaches and 1 flag tail prochilodus. The clown loaches usually hide for most of the day so I'm looking to add some more activity to the tank to make them feel more comfortable and coax them out more often. Also, it'd just be nice to have some more visible fish in the tank.

So I'm looking for a small shoal of fish that -

will primarily inhabit the upper water column
are outgoing and reasonably active throughout the day
are plant safe
will preferably stay under 8"
are preferably oddballs or at least colorful with interesting personalities

Let's hear your ideas!

How about a shoal of archer fish? They look cool, are upper water fish, and you can amaze the girls that come over to your pad by having your archers spit at their food.

I know ppl will say that archers are brackish water fish, but I had mine for 8+ years in a community fw tank and didn't have problems.

Oh yeah, your loaches might be hiding all day if your lighting is too bright.

Some good suggestions.

African butterfly fish are cool, but as mentioned aren't really very active so I don't think they'd work for what I'm going for.

I've definitely thought of archers - I think they'd be awesome in my setup. I was worried about whether they'd do ok in freshwater. Also, are they active fish? I've never owned them in person but in public aquarium I feel like I've usually seen them floating in one spot.

Hatchetfish could work. I'm also thinking about Bosemani rainbows.

If you plan on keeping archer fish in fresh water make sure you pick the right species, some tolerate fresh better then others. I currently have 3 they are pretty active but not as active as big schools i've seen. Mine will eat anything you drop in the water. Sounds like they would be awesome in your set up though.
