u.s.
Anyone use or have used Top Fin Dechlorinator? I just bought a bottle for about $5 and it treats 2400g. Its a little cheaper than Prime, but doesn't neutralize ammonia & nitrites.

Top Fin is a petsmart brand. It does not compare to prime, as it is only sodium thiosulfate. With this product, the recommended dosing is not going to break a chloramine bond fast enough. In order to dose for chloramines you will need to do 5 times the recommended dosage. I think this product is made by API, and is the same as API's tap water conditioner.

I used to use this stuff, but then I switched to Prime.

Did I notice a difference? Nope, and I'm sure most people who say they do are lying... I mean my nitrates and fish health haven't changed since the switch, so what is there to compare?

It is pricier but you use less per dose, which is why I like it. And I can't get enough of the Prime smell! ;)

The test kits you are using probably don't read for bound nitrogen. They just read nitrogen forms. Check the reagents. Prime does significantly reduce the nitrate/nitrite/ammonia, which slows the growth of plants dramatically. If you live in an area that uses chloramines, then the topfin dechlorinator/API tap water conditioner will be far less effective than prime.

I never thought that Prime would reduce plant growth by binding to the normal aquarium nitrogenous compounds... makes sense.
