hello to you all this is my first post on mfk my q is i am thinking of buying a 150 gallon tank with bulk heads already pre drilled but not sure if to put them at the top or bottom i want to put in a sump under my tank also how do i prevent syphon back if anything goes wrong like power outage or pump failure also do i just use the bulk heads or would it be better to extend the bulk head internal outflow to more the middle of the tank or leave it at the top i know that it would prevent siphon off flooding but will this be able to pull all the detritus from the bottom if left at the top please help ps. not decided which fishes to keep as of yet arowana in mind at the moment but not fully decided is there any links that i can go to to see some sump set ups i have looked on u tube but mostly for marine set ups thank you for being there when i needed you're help

Welcome! You came to the right place! Poke around this area of MFK for your answer "Set up and filtration"
Basically: Your going to need some kind of overflow system where the water in the fish tank spills over an edge of some kind "overflow" then runs down to a sump below the tank. Check out www.glass-holes.com for good overflow ideas. The problem for the overflows is they do not clean the bottom of the tank. I personally use both overflow/sump design and a canister filter for the lower area of the tank.

If I were you and I could get a new 150 drilled anywhere I wanted I would just go with a canister system. Check out Nu-Clear canister filters. Drill an even number of holes in the bottom (2 or 4) and hook up 1 or two canisters depending on your fish load.

If you do go with a sump type of filter system do not use check valves. There's ways around a check-valve system and you will be happy you never started using them.
