For the 200+ gallon tanks out there, how often do you have to top off or add water to the system? I have a 150 gallon with glass lids and a 40 gallon open top sump and I'm topping off water about every 5 or 6 days. I live in Colorado where the air is drier, but I was just wondering about other people.

I have a 150 as well. So far its only been with weekly water changes. So, every 7 days.

Top-offs are one of the reasons I like to run a drip system. I hate having to top off tanks.

How well the top of the tank or tanks are sealed will make a world of differnece... I've had large tanks/systems that were sealed well that could go two weeks before the level drop noticably... and I've had ones where they needed top offs every few days to keep the levels up.

I think because of the flow / volume going through the sump, which is uncovered that is where I'm loosing alot due to evaporation. I think I may custom cut a piece or two of acrylic to cover what I can. Unfortunately I notice it's low when the return pump baffled portion of my sump starts kicking out air into the tank because the water gets too low in that chamber. Kind of an obvious reminder to refill it.

I consider it a good balance when the evaporation causes annoyances at around 9 days... this allows me to do weekly water changes to prevent any concern... and gives me two days to get caught up before I'm forced to do one.

Cause once I break out the hose I might as well drain off a few gallons before topping it off.
