Topping off water due to Evaporation

Yes it is fine to top off but really if you are doing weekly water changes there is no need for it. Clean mechanical media on a weekly basis, this will help keep nitrate levels lower by removing solid waste before it breaks down.
 
I normally rinse out my mechanical media in tank water that I've siphoned from the tank. Even though it's primarily mechanical, it is also colonized with bacteria and rinsing in tank water avoids killing them off
 
Thanks you guys, that is all. It's only that I realized that I probably rinse my mech. filtration in siphoned aquarium water about once per month. Now that my biological load is getting rather heavy, i think i will need to pump this to once a week. and maybe give away some fish.
