my choices have been narrowed down to:
Nikon d3000
Nikon d5000
Canon xsi

I like the d3000 because it is pretty new (newer than the xsi) but i wont be spending as much as i would if i got a d5000 (becuase it has less mp and no moveable lcd)
The xsi has nice mp but the lenses are more expensive than nikons, also nikons warranties are far cheaper.

the d5000 would really be like a luxury, it is basically my dream camera but it is pricey.

So which would you go with under the circumstances?

well i went with the sony a230 today. mainly because the lenses are cheaper because the stabilisation is in the camera and not in the lenses. this reduces the price of the lenses and means I can go with cheaper 3rd party lenses without much issue.

the a230 is my first DSLR and i didnt want to spend too much as im still learning. my choices were what you have in your list but i went with the a230 in the end.

out of your 3 though i would probably go with the d3000. on a few reviews ive read that the d5000 costs a bit more for nothing much extra in return.

if youre willing to spend the money on a d5000, just get a used d90 instead. much better camera

Thanx poly-nomial for this thread, I was considering buying a new camera and this thread is very helpful, Thanx evrey one for the informations

If you don't want to purchase a used camera, your best choice is to go examine the cameras in person yourself. This helped me a lot in making a decision. I have a Rebel XSi by the way, I'm not trying to persuade you to buy either a nikon or canon, but I personally bought the canon because I liked how it felt in my hands and thought the button layout was nice. Prior to my purchase; over 90% of my research was on nikons. So seeing and holding the camera in person will help you make the best decision. Also, when I actually go out and take pictures or take pictures of fish I never use the live view function.

Also keep in mind the cost of future lenses. AF, AF-S, EF, EF-S cost. Find out which lenses are compatible and how much they cost.

honestly, if you're new to dslrs, get a d3000 so you can learn all of the functions of each mode and how to change ISO, aperture, etc. it's an entry level dslr and that's why i got one rather than the d5000. i doubt you'll need the d5000 unless you're going to take videos or something. However, I do agree with jcardona1. If you have the money to spend, you should buy a d90. it is amazing.

d3000... you saw my pictures lol ;)
