So... on friday i did a partial water change, about 15%, nothing too out of the ordinary. I feel I have good filtration, and good aeration... and I know how my pleco and oscar behave. well, yesterday my oscar started acting a little weird, and last night, after all the nights were off, he had jumped and splashed a little, enough to alarm me, (his tanks in my room). I decided to wait and if he did it again, i would turn on the light and check. Sure enough a few seconds later, he did. This time he got a nice gash on his head, and a scratch on his head, with a little gash on his eyelid. along with a scratch on his little arm fin. EVer since then he has been chilling in the corner, not so much on the bottom, but just near the corner, sometimes pressing against the glass. He has not been himself, no excitement which i come near the tank and even when i would go to feed him, not much of a response, not even with beef heart... It's sad. :/... at some points, he is barely moving at all. ive been trying to figure out the cause, and I haven't gotten very far, the cuts seem pretty superficial as they have already began to heal and they look a little better.. Im thinking about doing a bigger water change tomorrow.. I know i should do something fast because this is kind of freaking me out. my pleco seems to be totally fine.

I need advice!!!

You might want to remove the carbon from your filter and add some Melafix and maybe turn the temp up a little.

I've heard stories from people saying that their Oscar slammed against the glass and swims/acts weird; but after a while they get better :D.

Hope yours gets better. :)

heh, thanks. :) yeah, he is a goof ball sometimes... but usually he just goes about being himself, I don't like how depressed he looks, like paralyzed almost. :/ the temp is currently at 78.5.. :/

No problem :D
Bump it up to at least 80 for now.

And I also have my fishtanks in my room so I always hear my catfishies splashing around :P

well, i just saw the post on including a lot of information so a diagnosis can be made. so heres some info..
my tank is a 75 gal. been set up for about 1 1/2 months. have had oscar and pleco for about 2 years.

filters are; cascade 1000 canister and marineland 200 HOB.
aeration: powerhead and airstone

temperature is currently 78.8

did test strip reading yesterday; nitrate:20, nitrite:0, water hardness: 75 (soft), i dont remember the akalinity but the pH was pretty close to being acidic...

and i wanna say the ammonia is very low since the nitrite is?... would this be correct or could the nitrites be 0 and ammonia high?

I think some will suggest you get the API master test kit instead of strips. w/o really knowing your AM levels can make assumptions.

I also think many will say make larger w/c & more frequent (try daily for 7days), also clean out your mechanical/sponge media in tap water but the other media (bio-media espec.) in tank water.

w/o any physical signs I think it be a parasite of some kind. I would suggest prazipro.
try www.kensfish.com for very good prices/selection/low shipping

good luck.

Okay, so I performed a water change of approx 25 gallons, in the 75 gal, but from the look of it, it looked like about 50%, cleaned the gravel real well and the tanks looking nice.
My oscar is no longer in the corner like he was, but he is moving pretty slow....
He will look up at the top like he does for food, but when I try and give him something he doesn't respond like normal. He just seems lethargic, what could be causing this??...

I would do a 50% water change again and see what happens.

haha not the answer i was lookin for. ...
i need to get a diff. method. my water changes consist of a 3 gal bucket.
haha

Do yourself a favor, spend $40 and buy a python. You will never regret it.
