I didn't see a noob section so maybe it's ok to post here. My first time here and brand new to all this fish stuff. All I have is a 55 gallon I know I am emberassed to say that :(. But I am at college and can't go any bigger. Ok my question is what should I do first. Should I test my water to see what fish I can keep before I do anything or what?

Welcome to MFK! It's okay, I only have 1 tank bigger than that, and I only have had it for about 2 months! Is it fresh or saltwater? Dimensions? Do you have a heater, filter, light, food, etc.?

has it been cycled?

lol i started off with a betta lmao... then suicided a few goldfish... then went onto bigger fish after working at a lfs... lol

I couldn't find the edit button but I went to petsmart before here to get info and I asked what fish am I able to keep in a 55 gal comfortably. The lady told me all of their fish will go in a 55 gal and I just knew that isn't right even if I have never owned a fish before.

My tank is not even set up yet I mean like no water. I do have a filter, heater, light but no food because no fish. I haven't got fish yet because I wanted to talk to the pro's and do it right the first time.

Well before I start looking at fish I want I thought I needed to test my water or something because don't certain fish need certain ph lvl's?

get that baby set up and running. stay freshwater as salt is nowhere to start if you dont wanna get mad and give it up. make sure you put it on a proper stand (one that can hold 600 lbs.) then start thinking about what direction you wanna go fish wise and start doing maintenance research(water changes, filtration, things like that.)
