My tank has become smothered by an algea that is so hard to get off that I struggled using a razor blade. My last resort is emptying the 75 gallon tank and using chemicals. Anybody have any other safer alternatives? Thanks

3rd post in a few days concerning this "hard to remove" algea. Kinda scary

Take a old credit card or gas card and use that instead of a razor. The harder the edge and the plastic the better, not something laminated like a driver license or it will eventually just peel apart. It's easier to hold than a razor and will clean more surface area faster.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a shot

They make algae scrapers with a metal blade - I had to resort to one of those myself. I was worried about scratching the glass but its worked well so far.

ive seen some pretty intense looking algae scrapers at the LFS, last winter i even used one to scrape ice off the car and it worked just as well as any ice scraper, so id imagine it would do quite well with even the toughest algaes. Ive never had to use the scraper for algae, most are double sided and have a soft brush too. I got mine for 7 dollars and its reduced the amount i need to put my hands in the tank by a lot, and if you have nippy aggressive fish this is a pretty good peace-of-mind saving my fingers purchase lol.

That's exactly what I need. I have a large managuense that does not like anything in his tank, so any time spent with hands outside the water the better!

I hear ya on that one, once I started feeding worms to my red wolf fish he now thinks my pinky is a worm whenever it strays away from my hand.. so I'm in the same boat haha they have various lengths usually, at pet smart for sure, so even if you have a 24" high tank you can still reach the bottom without getting your hands wet!

I sound like a darn advertisement for the things, but mines been so useful its brilliant. Plus it lessens the chance of polutting your water, as long as you keep it clean.

Gota love a jag!! i use a algae brush every other week to keep it off the tank glass, hands in the water for any amount of time not an option.

I used the credit card method and wouldn't you know...the algea came right off! Thanks a lot cookie for the suggestion.
