So I have been thinking of consolidating my current tanks and instead of having 3 tanks. I'm thinking of getting myself a 125gal 6 ft tank.

Has anyone been through this before, any regrets? Haha

I currently have 2 55 gallons and one really old 90 gallon high. The 55 gals are in good shape but the 90 gallons is getting pretty hazy and looks pretty beat. I've been thinking about the benefits of just having one tank like I used to in the beggining (for the ease of maintenance) and possibly lower my power consumption as I wouldn't need as many filters and heaters running at once.

What do you think, one nice big tank better than 3 separate smaller tanks? Yay or nay?

I mostly keep south american cichlids and two bichirs.

If you don't remove or sell the other aquariums lol you will set one back up.

Thought I would be happy with two 6ft 125gal tanks, now I want a third......

i had the exact same thought and did the exact same thing as you

traded 3 x 55 gallon for 1 x 180 gallon. now i have 2 x 180 gallon and 1 x 125 gallon and finding excuses to get 1 more

What you want to do is forget the 125, get a 300 gallon tank, use the 55s for dual sumps, and the 90 as a breeding/quarantine tank.
I love it.

I thought if be happy with a 55 gallon but here I am with 3 55's and 3 75's. Life is screwy eh?

I have a 6 foot tank plus two 90 gallon tanks. But let us say you don't have the room or money for three tanks. Then you do pose an interesting question which no one has answered so far. Everyone says "have more" and that does not answer your question.

The pros of one big tank might be less maintenance, cheaper operation, and ability to keep larger fish. The downside of one big tank is that you might have to limit yourself to less varieties of fish because some may not have compatible diets, personality etc. With three smaller tanks you can keep guppies, cichlids, and tiger barbs, just as an example. That would be a bad combination even in a big 6 foot tank.

Only you can decide, but maybe this will give you something to think about.

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree with your statement of being able to keep a smaller variety of fish with a bigger tank. You would actually have a much greater selection of fish to choose from and in fact you could now have fish that would not be able to live with other fish together. What are the chances of a flowerhorn and a red devil living together peacefully in a 75 gallon and a 180 gallon?
