As you all know I have 55G marine tank. I also have a 100G freshwater tank. I'm wanted to break the 100G down and transfer everything from the 55 over to it. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with doing this? Ill be transferring the 55 lbs of live rock, about 40 lbs of live sand, and livestock. I already have a FX5 canister running on the 100G and was thinking of using the empty 55 as a sump underneath if it will fit. The skimmer i have is rated for FOWLR tanks up over 200G so i think i'm good on it. The only thing i think i might have to get extra would be more power heads, live rock, and more sand. This will be a lengthy process over a span of 3 months. Hopefully have everything set up by the new year. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Its reletivly easy too do..Use 3/4 of the water from the 55 into the 100 and fill up the rest with new saltwater. I would replace the sandbed completly and just use a few cup fulls of the old sand bed to give it a life boost...Yes, more live rock and flow is going too be needed....time to buy some korallia's ? ;)

reef that's what i was wondering, how much of the sand i have now should i use. As far as power heads go, i have two korallia 2's. Im thinking if i get two more korallia 3's it should be enough. Im going to keep my fx5 on it so thats gonna help also. Should i just fill that up with live rock or keep the ceramic rings and just wash them on a reg basis?

It might not hurt to wash down 100gl tank with some vinegar and water. 100gl should be nice difference

Yeah, ill have to give it a good scrub down. The difference im looking forward to is the front to back, more room for the fish to swim. Now Ive got to find two big jaguars homes now.

you'll need more live rock and sand for the new tank and more pumps. Take your time and watch for the cycle to happen from the move.

I would put the fx5 on the 55 for a month or so for the media to get seeded. Get just regular sand for the and fill the 100 with 60 gallons of new water. then just take a day and put the LR in a bin of 55 water and move over the livestock and sand from the 55 to 100 and add the LR on top of all that. Transfer all the filters over to the 100 and you are done. Add more LR when you want. As long as you move the LR, old water and filters it is like doing a 50% water change on the new tank. There is going to be a mini cycle but should not be anything major. My thinking is if it was good stock levels in a 55 with what you have it will be good in a 100. You won't need more LR until the fish start to get bigger or you add more live stock.

Good point on the stock level theory, i was wondering this myself. If the rock can handle my bio-load now in the 55, why not in the 100.

I never got an answer about the media in the fx5? Currently its packed with ceramic rings in each basket. Would it be better to take that out or what?

yea if anything I would save yourself some money and go out and get some base rock and put it in the 100 first and stack your lr on top of it and it will mature with your tank. I am gonna make my own base rock and put the 100pds of LR I have on top of it when I set my 180 back up. I used the GARF site for some cool ideas.
