How do I do it exactly? Can I just put the filter pad into my sump and its insta cycled? I assume its not that easy...

Your right, it`s not that easy.
Moving the media will give you a big jump on the cycle, but it will not be instant.
If going fishless, you can cut your normal cycle time close to half, using the media.
If going with a fish-in-the-tank cycle, you will still be way ahead of the cycle. You just need to watch your ammonia/nitrite levels and WC to protect the fish.

Perfect answer.

If you do nothing more than add used media, then you run the risk of losing your BB. As KS stated, this will give you a big jump on the cycle, but you still need to be active to keep the cycle going.

Avoiding any cycle is possible. I recently switched fairly heavy stock from a 52 gallon to a 150. I used a huge cooler to keep everything from the 52 in tank water while I made the switch. I moved over both the xp3 and bio350 from the old tank to the new with old media. I used the sand from the old setup plus 60lbs of new of course.....It went down like a massive change absolutly no mini cycle. Never saw any Ammonia or Nitrite whatsoever! Two months later and i ditched the Bio for a fx5 and all is good to go!:headbang2
