A little place called C At Hell
Helloes,

I'm looking to build a new stand for my 125g tank, and was wondering if there's anybody with experience transferring a semi loaded tank to a new stand?

I know I'm going to have to remove most of the water from the tank, but would like to keep as much as possible in the tank without having the glass on the bottom of the tank give way.

Thank you in advance

Considering that the tank itself weighs around 200lbs (not including the gravel/sand/decor), and each gallon of water weighs over 8lbs, I would suggest getting as much water as possible out the tank. Just think of it as a 100% water change. The BB is going to be in the gravel and filtration media anyway. You gain very little by saving the water.

Is there anyway to move the tank, even with the water taken out? Trying to avoid damaging the tank, while doing as little damage to myself or anybody crazy enough to help as possible.

Yeah, I've moved a lot of tanks with the gravel in them still. Just try to avoid any sudden movements that my shift stuff inside. ideally you'd want to have people to lift the tank and another couple of people to pull the old stand out and put the new one in. This way you are only lifting the tank up and putting it back down. Then you want to get dechlorinated water back in the tank as soon as possible so that the BB don't die off.

Bought a 125 from a guy once who had 4 or 5 inches of gravel in it that he wouldn't take out - he and his friend helped load it in our truck. Took 4 guys to carry it, no damage to the tank - but I did take out half of the gravel before we carried it into the house. Mainly cause we had less help there.

Thanks HokieFish, will just have to try the lift and switch when everything is ready.

Thanks Deb, yeah I'm gonna need to take out most of the decor rocks...The gravel shouldnt be too much of a problem but getting enough people to help will be the issue.

Hello; To my thinking there are increased risks with trying to move a large tank with anything in it. Even if you do not break anything, there will likely be an increased risk of springing a leak. What ever gravel and water left will add considerable weight to the task. I would only move a tank of that size when empty.

I wouldn't even attempt transferring a 125G with any water and as little substrate or decor in it as possible. I'd transfer the substrate to temporary buckets or clean/new trash cans if I was doing something similar.
