I've got a healthy lake in my neighborhood full of Lilly pads. I'm tempted to transfer a plant or 2 to my 75 gal freshwater aquarium. I'm not experienced with plants. Anybody have advice on transferring these to my tank, how I should do it, what precautions I should take, and even if I should attempt this at all? Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!

You have to be careful when you get plants from the lake or river. There are parasites such as leeches that will be in the plants. Even with quarantine, you may not get everything out such as snails and baby leeches.

Also, if you are getting lillies, they probably will not survive in a tank string, due to the large amounts of light that they need. Unless you are running metal halides or something equally as bright, I'd say its not worth the hassle.

lilies from a lake grow too big for a tank. You would be better off getting a species of dwarf lily. If you do plan on collecting and using plants from a local lake, you should soak the plants in a bleach solution (one part bleach to 19 parts water) for one to three minutes, depending upon how delicate the plant is. Hope this helps..
