I am currently visiting my family in RI and i went to the LFS (critter hutt) and saw a mosaic gar, after reading in here i've read they only get between 8-12" and looking so much like a true gar i'd really like to make him an addition to my 55. however its a 400 mile journy equalling to about 7-9 hrs depending on traffic and my speed haha. however my dad is giving me a 10 gallon set up for free, could i keep him in the 10 gallon and throw a blanket over it to insure heat, is there any good way to transport him or should i try and find one when get home? this is the only place i've ever seen one and my LFS has never carried cool fish like that.

I have done a 5gal bucket (with lid, from Home Depot) inside a Styrofoam cooler(gander mountain) with a battery powered bubbler(for bait fish, Gander Mountain) and heat packs(8-10hr hand warmer packs, Home Depot and Gander Mountain) around the out side of the bucket in the cooler.

It was all improvised with in about an hour at the local strip mall. Where a LFS was going out of business when visiting relatives.

It can be done.

what you need to do is just like someone would ship him to you.

Here's a few options

1. Get a box and go to lowes and get a sheet of styro and cut it to fit the box. Ask the LFS to double/triple bag him for you and buy a battery air pump and stick in the bag.

2. get one of those small syro coolers and just add him to that along with the barrery pump.

3. See if you can find someone with o2 and bag him properly like a shipper would. Or bag buddies. and then toss the bag in that 10 gallon and wrap the bag in the blanket.

If you've never transported a fish that far a few things you need to look out for are. Temp change over time (hence needing a styro box, styro cooler or heating pads)
o2 b/c if ths fish can't breath he'll die (for Real lol) And how much the fish has ate in the last day or two. Ideally you starve them so they don't "go" in the bag and polute the water faster and die (due to the ammo in the urine mostly)

It's not hard getting a fish moved that many hours it's just you need to get your crap together and be prepared. I've moved a fish around 10 hours by car and it's fine. Still kicking around with it's new owner. He meet me half way (5 hours, and this time of year) So it's totally doable

what i was thinking was get a 10 gallon to hold him, then put him back in the bag when i was getting ready to leave and put him in the bag surrounded by heat bags and cover the tank and bag with a blanket. Along the way there is multiple road side stops that i could replace the water with every few hours. does that sound like a good idea? i could immobilize the bag with something so while there will be movement the fish won't be all over the place.

the only problem with adding any other water over the trip is making sure you can dechlor it and making sure you get your temps close. You don't want to add a bunch of clod water and you don't want to add water without treating it.
