TRANSPORTING FILTER HELP!

ok so when this semester of college is over, ill be going 4 hours back to virginia.

I REALLY love my little guy tank with my tetras, black skirts, glofish, and blue ram and pleco (half of these ive saved from irresponsible college students).

and i know for a fact there wont be an established tank back at home. how can/can i put my fish in say a bucket w/all the filter material and drive back to virginia, set the tank up, and then put my filter on with the media (that was in the fish water) in and then let it run for a lil and put my fish in.

Id expect a mini-cycle, but i think they could handle it.

any ideas?
 
Put everything in a tote. Everthing that's in your filters goes into the tote as well. I mean fish, deco. water, and etc.
Then when you get home set up tank fill with half new water,half water from tote. Put media back in filter, arrange everything etc.

I'd say it would work, it is only 4 hours.
 
If you can keep the filter media wet, either by putting it in the same container as the fish or just by placing it in a zip lock bag of water, you will be fine. No mini cycle at all. Filter media looses about 50% of its bacteria every 24 hours once separated from the fish. In 4 hours it won't loose much at all.
 
I had to do the same thing when i moved home after college, it was quite an ordeal, but i was moving a 55g home. I just put my fish (all were still pretty small at the time) in a large cooler (for insulation) with water, filter media in a separate rubbermaid tote with water. My drive home was only about an hour and a half so I kind of just hoped for the best.

Another idea is to buy a battery powered air pump and run a sponge filter in a tote while transporting, this will not only provide filtration, but will also provide aeration to the water. Run the sponge filter in your tank ahead of time to seed it with BB. Just a thought.
