is it possible to transport a fish in a bag in luggage? if it is, im thinking of doing it.

and of course, there will be water in the bag.

Im not sure on how collecting trips go ahead once they've caught some fish, but I supose they might be able to go on a plane with direct oxygen and sufficent water. Quarentine might snag the fish off you and 'dispose' of it but check with AquaMojo. As far as I know, he's the only one whos been on regular trips to mexico collecting cichlids.

Yes you can. Go to a store that sells fresh fish. The receive fillets in large (luggage sized) flat styro containers. Your best bet is to bring back small fish...smaller the better...less chance of them poking a hole in a bag and more room for additional fish.

Rather than go with bags and air, look for a breathable bag by Kardon. You can find people selling them on aquabid. With this bag you don't have to add air. Co2 and Oxygen pass back and forth through a permeable layer. Make sure when you bag the fish all of the O2 is out. Add a very small piece of poly filter to help absorb waste...like a 1/2 inch piece. Any more in the bag will hurt the fish's slime coat. If you are shipping fry, cut that in half.

What I do when I travel a distance is take that styro and fashion small "cubbie" with heavy cardboard. This keeps the bags seperated nicely...less bouncing around. If you are traveling now in the U.S. you won't need any heat. Pack your clothes around the styro. Different situation if you are sending the box as luggage.

I've never had any problem shipping them back. I just make sure the guy checking them in knows what the liguid sloshing around in my bag really is.

Good luck.

Consider it a no go if you are crossing any borders (import/export licensing).

I did it as a kid but things have changed. You will need to check with the airline that you will be traveling with. Recently someone here did it and checked the fish through security. Since the fish was alive and swimming, it was obvious that it was in water. Use a large plastic container for maximum air space. Just use enough water to cover the fish. Also, do not feed the fish for two days prior to the trip.

I was told I could check fish on the same flight I was on providing enough measures were taken to prevent leaks. Then, the fish were denied check in just before my flight and I was shown a directive stating fish were no longer allowed on passenger flights.
I had to rebook my flight and take the fish to the airport post office. They balked at shipping too but, agreed to it finally. $923.00 later, the fish were on their way.

hmmm Im surprised you would be alowd at all. I mean you cant take a sealed bottle of vitamin water or water in let alone a bag of water.

Id make a positive confirmation before security says no when you show up.

Simply put you can no longer ( as Chompers was saying and I so often did it ) carry it with you in the cabin.

You will have to put it in the carfgo hold ( in styro boxes, no problem in that, thats how importers/exportes do it all the time )..

But in any case, before doing, check to see what licences and vet health certificates, and, if applicable, Cites and so on...

Regrettably, most of the fish get left behind, because there is always a paper missing.

Sorry to drag up an old thread from the depths, however:

I have been looking into this recently and have found that no airline will allow you to check fish.

Southwest Airlines - No pets, period except for service dogs
American Airlines - Only cats and dogs, although they can refuse service based on temperment
JetBlue - dogs and cats in the cabin, no pets can be checked
Express Jet - Only domesticated cats, dogs and household birds, only in the cabin, crew can refuse pets at any time
US Airway - One small domestic dog, cat or bird per passenger is accepted in the passenger cabin for an $80 fee each way
Delta - Pets cannot be checked as baggage on Delta- and Aeromexico-operated flights. Dogs and cats can be taken in cabin, restricted to the list on the website

Thats just a few, Ive check all the large companies in the US and they all say about the same thing. Most airlines will ship pets as cargo but as far as I can tell the TSA requires that you become a "known shipper" to ship packages over 16 oz
