Im taking some dozen fish to a fish store thats about 30-45min away and im wondering what's the best way to transport them. I don't have any chemicals and I don't have those o2 things the fish store has so what should i do? Should I use a bucket? Should I use plastic bags? I don't want to get there with dead fish...

how large are the fish? if your just transporting medium sized cichlids, a bucket will do just fine, if your worried, bring 2, six fish in each, 30 minutes isn't a long time.

also half way through, you could try scooping some water out then pouring it back in, this aerates the water.

one more thing, try and keep the buckets covered, this will help retain heat, do anything you can to insulate the buckets, covering the sides with fleece blanket does this very well.... good luck, i wouldn't be too worried about it, sometimes i think ppl stress more than fish do during moves. (not to say its not stressful for the fish, but its not that bad.)

I do have a buckets that sounds like a good idea. I do have a styrafoam cooler what do you suggest with it?

I definatly do stress about my fish more than they do.

The largest cichlid I have is 3.5in so not that big.

well the cooler will definitely insulate (keep heat in) better than the bucket, but depending on the size of the cooler the bucket may be better choice.

if you have one of those 3 foot camping coolers, by all means, use that! Put all the fish in there; be sure to rinse the inside with salt and or boiling water, dont use soap.

good luck, i'm sure they will be fine.

The best way would be to use a large clean cooler or an isulated foam containers. Ask your LFS if you can have some large fish bags for next time.

Thanks for the comments guys. The fish arrived all happy and healthy. I put them in plastic bags and put air in them using a bicycle pump. Then i put the bags in a styrafoam container and container the cooler shut. The container also had two holes in it.

A guy gave me two jack dempseys and two convicts, all large and put two per medium ziplock bag. They were in these bags for about 15 minutes while his tank emptied then another 45 minutes home. I would think buckets would be enough to get the fish there. I have seen somebody transfer this massive fish in a large cooler as well.
