I will be off to school in sept...I'm taking my fish with me,it about 8hrs to get there.I will be buying a 55gal rubbermaid tub for the fish...is there anything I should do to get them ready for when the times come?
Any info will help!!!!!!!!!!

what i would do.....

- get a ac adapter for your car
- heater ready
- get a box filter and fill it with some of your current bio media before leaving, powered by air pump
- in your 55gal rubbermaid - 50% tank water, 50% new water - 2x prime dose
- dont feed your fish for 1-2 days prior to move..

- everyone makes it!

Your info states you're in Palm Springs, but you did not say where you were headed to. At that time of year (Sept.) you won't need any heaters. In fact, you'll need ice packs unless the A/C in your car is working well. Best thing for you to do is bag the fish (seperately) with enough water to cover their backs and fill the rest of the bag with pure oxygen (you can get pure 02 from a welding supply) and tie it off with a rubber band. They will literally last for a couple of days like that if not longer. Do not feed them 3 days prior to bagging them up otherwise they may crap in the bag and create a very stressful situation for them and you. This is how fish are shipped around the world and with great success. I hope this helps.

Fasting the day before the move and some stress zyme or the like in the water if your fish can take it.

Age the transport water, match the temp and put the fish in just before you leave.

Get a piece of .5" thick Styrofoam cut an inch smaller than the inside of the tub and float it on the surface to limit splashing.

You may want to duct tape the lid shut to help stop it from leaking or create a seal for the lid from foam tape (you can get large construction size black trash bags that the tub can fit into to help save your cars interior).

Either a battery operated pump and heater (if you can find one) or a converter that will handle the wattage of the pump & heater (best bet).

And since you have the time make some test runs of the set-up (just around town) to get an idea of water temps and changes.

Where are you going to school and for what?

LOL!!!
I'm in palmSprings CA and going Sacramento CA....I'm going to Wyotech....To be a Diesel tech also be a performance diesel tech.....POWERSTROKE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a 150 watt converter and I got the rubbermaid already.. I got to get another converter!!!!!

I was at the lfs and he told me to get this stuff that they sell to drug the fish so they dont stress during the move.....I dont rememeber the name of it!!!!!!!
Wat do u guys think?

All that for an 8-hour trip?!

I would use two large coolers. One for the aro and one for the rest of your fish. No need for any O2 or air pump as the sloshing of water will keep more then enough DO in your water. Heaters in so-cal? :screwy:
