I plan on visiting an independent aquatics store in the next few days, but as the weather here has been HORRIBLE, I'm concerned about the little dudes on the way home. I will not be driving a car; public transportation may take about an hour or so. I've seen fish housed in coolers temporarily; would this suffice?

You should be fine. I just brought several home recently in a shipping "cooler". If you are REALLY concerned, you could carry a heat pack with you. Have a thermometer inside the cooler. If it starts to cool, you could add the heat pack off to the side. You might want to wrap it in a towel as well.

But, unless it's terribly cold and you have to wait outside for a long time, you should be OK.

Good luck!

where did you get your cooler?

I bought an actual shipping "cooler" from the LFS. They are a bit more compact, a bit thicker wall and the lid fits a bit tighter than a standard styrofoam cooler. I paid $5. I always saw guys bringing these things in when picking up or delivering fish. I finally asked and he had no problem selling one. They may even give you one...this guy offered, but I insisted on paying something.

When you order fish online, these containers are how they are typically shipped. You could call ahead to be sure.

It's a lot nicer outside here today than it has been lately. Hopefully, it's the same for you!

Good luck today, have fun picking out your fish!

I don't see any problems transporting them on public transportation. What local fish store are you visiting

I've kept fish in large transport bags for 2 hours before. I just made sure to shake up the bags every once in a while to replace the o2 in the water..........
