I have an albino channel cat (~6") in my 75, which is not the permanent housing. He somehow damaged his eye extremely bad. I cannot get a picture of him as he is in a pipe hiding. I will do my best to explain with the use of the attached photo: the outer "skin" or spectacle has been torn 3/4 o the way around the circumference and is attached at the top. This leaves it as a "flap", and the remainder of the eye is now open.

I understand that fish can live perfectly fine without an eye, especially catfish as they rely mainly on “smell” to locate food. Which, by the way I tested with 2 sinking Hikari pellets, so he will still eat. I have done daily water changes (50%), added salt 1tablespoon/5 gallons changed, and turned the lighting off. The tank temperature is currently at 82 degrees F.

Here is my main concern: since the fish still has the eye intact, not protected by the spectacle covering, and only restrained from its optic nerve, what do I do from here?

Update: It has been 5 days since the incident. The fish is doing fine, eating, swimming around, but still has the appendage (Eyeball and skin) intact. I am keeping up with daily water changes and aquarium salt at 1 tablespoon/5 gallons. There is no sign of infection or change in habit.

Does anyone have advice as to how long it takes (general idea) for a fish to heal wounds?
