hi all,

i just got a new motoro yesterday, and the problem is by the time i got it home the water was really bad, i done a water test in the box with a dip stick and it shows that the ph was below 6, and nitrate have hit 120!

the seller boxed him up about 10am and the ray didnt get to my home untill 2pm, so thats 4hrs?! and the water was full of crap and all gone yellow and smelly nasty

i then empty as much water out as poss then i use the drip method and after 30mins i retest the water in the box and it was close to my tank's condition so i transfer it into my tank.

my tank's reading is.

temp 25*C
nitrate below 20
ph, 7.1-7.3

he still not eating yet, i've try earthworms so far but no responds. and he just sit there on the bottom not moving much, but his breathing seem to have come down since yesterday.

how ever, this morning i notice he lefted one of his sides up, is this the begining of death curl?

i've done other 20% water change this morning, and added salt.

does any one know whats going on?? can some one please help

Gradually raise the temperature to 32 degrees, make sure there is enough airation and current, check your water and filtration, if the water is not ok --> 70% water change, if the filtration is not ok (filter must be running for at least a week, and should be started up with some bacteria or so) --> then you have a problem.

Greetings Mark

Lifting of the disc is just irritation - ammonia burn, rough gravel, etc. Death curl is actual curling of the disc edge.

Eating - Do not be surprised if he takes a week to eat, although un-common for a motoro to wait that long, it is possible.

Assuming your water parameters are fine, specifically ammonia and nitrite, just relax, he will come around.

If the water hit 120ppm nitrate in 4 hours of packaging, I would assume that was the level and water quality that he came from. 4 hours transit time is very fast. He is probably pissed about his old conditions and may take a few days to acclimate to your new tank with good parameters.

the nitrate is nothing my tank is at 80-100 all the time and they bred in that :D

its only nitrite Amonia and PH changes you need to worrie about

every single ray i have moved the water smelled after transport

as long as the rays were not fed for 2 days before the were shipped then it should be fine

no feeding for 2 days before shipping is the golden rule

even if ur water params are fine, i would still do a small waterchange every day.

thx everyone,

i've given him some live river shrimps and a cut up earth worm, but he still not feeding yet.

however, he seems to settle down now and when i walk out the room he starts to move about, unlike yesterday he just sits there.

i'll try to take a few pic 2moro to update you guys.

thanks again :)

thats good.... every ray is different some rays may take a few weeks to get eating... just keep the water clean and he will come around...
