I just noticed my Black Lancer has HITH. What is the best way to treat it and the fastest?!?!?!?! :(:(:(

unfamiliar with black lancers altogether, but im treating my wallago cat for HITH or HLLE disease currently. I removed carbon from the filtration as it can remove a necessary level of phosphates and other essentials, regularly add melafix (just for precaution) and i do extremely frequent water changes (about 5-6 a week). Also, i add vitamins to their food before feeding, asborbic acid or vitamin c is responsible building and repairing tissue. Since doing this, i have noticed roughly a 60% improvement. Its a pain to do this obviously so a quarantine tank might be more practical then doing freqent waterchanges on a huuge tank.

Good Luck!

Is Melafix a preventative or an actual medicine? Mine is in a 29 QT right now. How do they develop HITH. My circuit breaker tripped and my filters where off for about 3 hours. He was fine before that but then I left the house and came back and he had a big white spot in the center of his head.

I also treat their food with chemipure, I think thats the name. SHould I raise the temp up a bit. It's around 78-79 right now.

add a little salt and keep the water really clean pretty much all you should do

Thanks everyone, Already added salt and I found some melafix. What is the shelf life of melafix? I think I bought this bottle about 4 months ago. Thanks again

The causes of Hole in the head or head and lateral line erosion (HLLE) are greatly debated. Some have identified fungal sources, some say its environmental. The most common reasons for it (so we think) are poor water quality (either dirty water or high chemical concentrations out of the tap), lack of a high quality diet, lack of essential phosphates in the water, and a plethora of other reasons; you can google HLLE and see what they say about it. This is not to say that any of these reasons are concrete, some fish are very prone to HLLE while others seem almost immune to it.
The shelf life of melafix should be printed on the bottle with an expiration date and lot number. All the bottles i have bought off the shelf have been well in range of the date though, normally about 2 years till expiration.
Keep in mind that melafix is not actually designed to treat Hole in head or HLLE as there is no surefire cure. in fact it is thought that there is no cure at all, just trial and error methods to reverse the progression of the disease. IMO melafix has helped the healing of the lesions caused by HLLE in the fish that i have treated. Aquarium salt can be added though it should be used in moderation, many recommend using 1/2-1/4 of the recommended dosage. Some people swear by epsom salt baths to reverse the effects of HLLE.
You're main concentration right now should be vitamins and/or an increasingly varied diet plus LOTS of water changes (about 1/4 or 1/3 everday, if possible). A higher temperature is good too, try 82-82 degrees f. Remove active carbon from quarantine tank and make sure there is good oxygenation and water movement.

Good luck and let us know how it works out!

flash it and get a now one, the holes will not go away

We have been fighting HITH with our jaguar.. we really believe that some fish are prone to it..almost like they have it but it lays dormant until a significant change or stress occurs and then the disease shows its ugly head.. it takes forever to cure and sometimes never..but you can certainly try because it is possible.. but have patience because it is not something that will just go away..sometimes you manage to clear up one spot on their head and heartbreaking you will suddenly notice another...my jag is thriving and beautiful but so far he is still not cured.. and the fight goes on for almost two years now..if it wasn't for this continuous on going fight he would have perished long ago..i wish you best of luck..

Thanks everyone. I added some salt and turned the temp up and today I really can't see any sign of it anymore. I've done 40% WC up until today. I might hold off on tomorrow. I keep my eye on him!

It didn't seem to start out like a lot of stuff I read about HITH. It was nothing and then BAM, a huge bright white spot in the center of his forehead about 1/8-1/4" in diameter. The spot has went away and there is not dip or low spot on his head where it first appeared. Well hopefully all is good and thanks again for the replies!;):)
