Just curious if anyone knows a good way to treat a large oscar that has some heavy damage from the male wanting to breed and her not being quite ready yet. She got tore up pretty bad there are scales all over the tank. I put her in a 55 gallon tank as a medical tank to rehab her but all i have is melafix. It works great for most stuff but will it work fine to heal the missing scales? there are probably 100 scales on the sand in the tank.

All I ever use is clean, warm water. Feed lightly because she may not eat much if she's stressed. My psittacus had a giant gash down his side from crashing into some driftwood, and all I did was start large daily water changes. Within a few days it had started healing over. It never got infected or anything, and was completely gone within a week.

Good advice from Mr.Smith.I have melafix and a few topical wound medications,Bio Bandage,Wound Control, but it all starts with good, clean water.

Do exactly that, just keep them isolated in warm clean water with some meds. heres mine

missing eye, scales completely tore off of gill and sides, the fish had flesh hanging off

Thanks for the advice. Her sides are healing up nicely now i just used melafix and pimafix together. Seems to have worked out nicely now i just need to get her back eating. I throw 2 to 3 pellets in once a day(clean it out the following) and an algae wafer cause she eats them once in a while but she wont take anything at the moment maybe because she hasnt completely healed? I dont normally feed daily just trying to see progress.

Give it a while before putting her back into the other tank. At least a few weeks. Melafix works great to heal the missing scales as well as clean water, and water changes.

She will be going into a large pond with the male but im thinking of getting a couple azul pbass from jeff rapps first so there are some dither fish in the pond so she just doesnt take such a beating next time.

Azuls as dithers :o I think the bass would kill the oscars, never mind give it a beating.

just going by jeff rapps advice. he said he has kept these oscars with the pbass and a shoal of geophagus so if he reccommends it who am i to argue?

my female is fully healed now and eating like a champ too.

Good news that the O is healed. About the bass, ive just never heard of them being used as dithers.
