Here.
Hello everyone,

Out of curiosity, is the treatment for stingray sting the same for both salt and freshwater? In other words, are the poisons in these two type of ray the same?

This could prove to be valuable information. I'm just not quite sure because they took different evolutionary routes.

Thanks!

Best,
Jeff

yes, they are the same, but have slightly different protein based toxins, pm zoodiver, he will know more

There's also a sticky about what to do if you get stung. Kind of a "take this to the hospital" type white sheet for the doctors.

I have a copy laying with my tank. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks! I have it too... but I'm curious as to the poison protein differences in FW and SW varieties.

yeeep exactly.
Treatment is really just to make sure there is no more foreign objects left in the wound, clean the wound, and prescribe antibiotics for both sting types SW or FW. The biggest immediate pain reliever is to place the wound in hot water.

Toxin levels vary with species. Some a far worse than others. How much detail are you looking for?

Have they compared different freshwater species to each other?

I'm not sure if it's just that different people react differently, to ray stings or different types of rays have different venom, but the result do vary a bit.

I don't know anybody who has been stung by different types of rays of the same size, in the same way though, so theres no comparison.

From what I understand, most of the Amazon species are about the same. Toxin composition vaires between them and their marine counterparts.

I'll say from personal experience that the various Amazon rays hurt worse than Southerns and Yellows. (To me, the worst part about Southerns is the size of the barb.)
