I will be collecting Beani in a couple of weeks in Mexico, my question is for anyone who has experiance collecting wild CA cichlids. Do you treat with any meds after pulling the fish out of the lake, before bagging for return trip to the good ol' US of A ?? If so, what meds, dose, time etc... Also once back in the USA, what meds would one recommend for the quarentine period? Many thanks!

I'd treat for internal parasites after acclimating in the USA. If they have visible external parasites, treat them then as well. I don't like the use of broad spectrum meds and have collected fish from the wild many times with no ill effects (just quarantine and some salt.)

What strain are you collecting? Do you have the import/export permits?

Oh; and how much will it cost to bring me back one or two? :D

I def want to be on that list too.....

id try just salt and some clout when you get them back home with the temp jacked up to be honest.
and i got deep pockets, very deep pockets for one of these.

Thanks! Yes I have a F & W license, and all paper work if needed by US customs. The starin I am collecting is from "El Lago de Santa Maria del Oro", Nayarit, Mex. I found this lake several years ago while on a college Zoology trip into Mexico, it was loaded to the teeth with beani. This was back in 1994, so hope they are still doing well, since little vilages had popped up on one side of the lake, which is a pretty big lake! I will be selling each at $150.00

Yeah, but do you have permission from the mexican gov to collect? Gotta love countries that live by the Napoleonic Code :P

I will also be collecting "Red" Istanum from Tequistengo, Mex, a man made lake stocked with the Red form from Rio Papa***o, which is not too far. You can get this info from Cichlid Press' "Cichlid Year Book" Vo. 4, by Juan Miguel Artigas Azas.
