is it ok to use a trickle filter with a planted tank, no CO2

It should be fine. You could always convert it to a sump style filter if you decide to use CO2 later on. Also, you can dose with Excel instead of adding CO2 up to a point.

Additionally, it may help to build a cover for your wet/dry.

100% fine. like nugpuffer said it really only matters when someone is adding co2.
