Triggerfish and live rock

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This would be better posted in the Marine section, but here goes...

Live rock is just rock from the reef area, growing on it is all sorts of bacteria, micro-organisms, small inverebrates, algae, etc. There is no fish that "can't" go with live rock. Now, with live coral is a different story, some species of trigger will eat or destroy it.

blue throats are one of few that can be reef safe... but it's on an individual basis... and this def needs to go to the SW sub-forum.

This should go in SW sub-forum howeveer with that said, some triggers are reefsafe, as forementioned blue throats and niger triggers, however most will nip ot stony corals and I have seen some pick at leathers and softies. Triggers also like to pick on inverts. all triggers will leave your liverock alone. my favs, picassos, titans, and undulated triggers are for the most part not reef safe, but you could try with caution.

Most triggers will pick at things.

I have seen them eat leather corals...but never really kept one with anything other than softies, and foties can take the abuse.

I think that sps corals would be fine, and even most LPS. Softies are easy cause they can bite anywhere.

Inverts on the other hand, are totally fair game.

I plan on trying a niger again someday

excuse her, she's new.

she has a humu humu nuku nuku a pua'a. (indemic Hawaiian trigger fish) spec. Rhinecanthus rectangulus.

its predatory but i won't say its not an omnivore. it uses the rocks for cover usually.

Well, I stand corrected.

I have friends in Hawaii, and used to be a sponsored spearfisher. This is not the fish that I was taught was humu humu by my native friends.
