Has anybody ever kept and successfully spawned true parrots? Any advice on triggering a spawn would be appreciated, these are a proven pair but divided at the moment as male is being too aggro bumping the female's belly.

I'm feeding the female 2-4 earthworms each day depending on what she fancys, water currently kept at 32c (Temp was around 27-28 the first few days I had them and they would happily swim beside one another as in the video) upon turning up the temp I think the male has gone into breeding mode but female still doesn't fancy it. Large flowerpot on it's side down the other end of the tank for them.

Cheers

I hope this will help

A friend of mine had some successful spawns, doing large (50% per day) water changes with low pH (5-6, very low in minerals), with a combination of RO water, mixed with tannin infused tap(I believe he used everything from peat, leaves and tea bags to get dark brown color) with temps in the mid 80s.

Thanks both, I'll make a start on keeping pH lower as it's a bit high at 8.2 in my area. In the meantime I just need to figure out how to dissipate a bit of the harassment the male is giving the female. I've since added a pair of convicts to hopefully act as a bit of a target/dither and will continue with keeping them divided and letting them together once or twice a week to see how they interact... Anything else you can think of?

Thanks

I've spawned them a few times, lots of big water changes with warm acidic water gets them going. Unfortunately I don't think it'll work out at 8.2 but perhaps someone who knows otherwise will chime in.

The previous owner had them spawning in tap water of 7.2 - 7.4pH and not sure on hardness. Perhaps I need to look at dropping some peat in the filter?

Still strugging with aggression on the male's part, female slipped through the divider today and got kicked to **** whilst I was at work. I put in a parachromis and a pair of convicts to see if it would dissipate some aggro, but he seemingly ignores the potential 'threat' target fish and prioritises harassing the female over them. So they're back divided more securely now!
