Getting this 7 inch wild caught male trimac Saturday. He doesn't seem to have much coloration. Will it come with size? He's also in a tank with 9 other male amphs, about 7 of them are bigger. I'm pretty sure the issue is him not being the dominant fish and once he's alone in a tank my house he'll color right up. Figured I'd ask just in case I'm missing something.

I think your right on your suspicions of the lack of color due to the current tank set up he's in. Like you said he's not the dominant fish so he's not in full swing with his colors. Looks a little stressed with the dark coloration display. I think once you give him his own space, good quality pellet and treat him good the colors will start popping. Definitely looks like there's a lot of potential in that fish. I wish you the best

Thanks! Exactly what I wanted to hear. I have some northfin gold(like 80% krill) and cichlid formula. Also some extreme monster pellets. I'll pump him full of those with frequent water changes and see what happens.

Could definitely be stressed. A lot of the other fish are about double his size. Is there anything I should worry about? Him being stunted or anything?

No I wouldn't worry about that, from the looks of it he looks healthy but just stressed. Maybe he gets chased around, he doesn't have any characteristics of being stunted from the picture. Normally stunted fish have abnormally large eyes in reference to their body. Well at least that goes for discus so I'm assuming the same thing out of other cichlids. He seems like a nice thick healthy fish that just needs a change of scenery from his old tank and mates. I think if you give him the tank to himself like you said and do some good tlc it's gonna really pay off.

It was a little while ago but I think the current owner had said he wanted to get him out of their before he got big. The only reason I could think of him wanting to do that when his goal is a all male amph tank is maybe this guys a little overly aggressive and he's worried he'll become a bully with size. At least I hope that's the case! I want a fiesty wet pet. I'm not too familiar with trimacs, don't seem to see them too often. Figured it's worth the gamble, he'll be my first wild caught fish. Pretty excited to get him to his new home.

That's all good signs of a healthy fish, defending its territory and willing to fight or stand up for itself. He's gonna turn out to be a perfect wet pet specimen, sure he's fiesty with personality. They love to eat. I'm sure in a little bit of time settling in the tank hell greet you for food and come out a lot more. Very personable fish, I also like that they're not that common at least around here and maybe that's why your not too fimiliar with them.

Aren't very common around here. I've heard a couple people mention how food orientated and responsive they are. Would you say it's more so than other amphs?
