Hey,

I've had my 6" Trimac male for about two weeks now and his color is starting to brighten up. His fins are starting to get that pearly shine and the outline of his spots are starting to get more vibrant. I've noticed though that when the lights have been off for long periods of time the red in his eyes and on his throat looks faded until about 5-10 minutes after being turned on. Is this normal? I don't have any substrate in the tank at the moment.

Totally normal, it's because fish don't have eyelids so part of their brain shuts off when they "sleep". The quick change in lighting is why their colors take time to change back to "normal".

My old RD would do the same thing, would be a very pale orange when lights are off, after turning them on his color was a much deeper orange.

Post pics we love Tmac's.

I know its normal mine would do that also. I always had kinda of a chuckle because it reminded me when his eyes became fully red I would think the coffee was done.
