Hello.
New to the forums, been in aquaria for a while, but TOTALY new to Ploypterus and need a little help.

There was a guy selling P.lapradei Juveniles in my local papers for 3000yen each.
They are all the "Nigerian" breed.
I enquired and he had sold out. He said the only ones he had left had split and not so good fins.

He offered me one of these for 500yen with free postage, and I thought hell why not for that price!

Fish arrived today and the body looks very healthy (apart from what i am about to explain), He is active and eating sinking hikari pellets and little bits of chicken breast. He is around 3" long.
Along with the fish came a small note telling me the first 3 "spikes" of the dorsal fin closest to the head were in a real bad shape so he trimmed them off. He says this will help them grow back better?????

Now I am new to Polys, but this sounds real strange. (I have never heard of this or done it to my snakeheads)
Looking at the fish you can see he has trimmed them off leaving around 1mm stumps (all the other "spikes" are there minus the front 3 (though it looks like he trimmed 2). The rest of the dorsal fin isn't in that great shape too!

Anyhow is there any truth to his claims?
Will the fins grow back?
I want to keep this little darling whatever as I have grown real attached.

Thanks for any help/advice. Cheers.

Welcome to MFK! Anyway, sorry to say but I haven't seen one that has it's dorsal fin grown back. I have an ornate bichir with 2 twisted dorsal fins but it hasn't recovered.

Thats a real shame. He says as it was trimmed as a juvenile it will grow back better!

Well, I guess you get what you pay for.
I will keep the little fella though, as he allready seems to have buckets of character.

One thing though, it's swimming seems to be fine right now, but will the lack of 3 spike off his dorsal effect it's swimming later in life?

Thanks for your help.
