I have had 3 South American Puffers for about 6 months now. I finally noticed their teeth were getting long. So I new it was time to cut them. I've been dreading this day for a while because it took me 2 years to get a hold of them. An I still cant find any more for sale.
This was the craziest thing I've had to do while fish keeping. I used clove oil because it was only about $4 at a store. I've seen other peoples vids on YouTube so I fallowed there instructions. 3 drops of clove oil to 3 cups of water. I love these lil guys so seeing them going limp an belly up in the clove water was scary. Once they went out it was fairly easy to trim the teeth with cuticle clippers. After they were trimmed I put them into a quarantine bowl for about for about 3mins until they righted them selfs an began to swim regularly. I'm happy to say all 3 survived an are even fatter an happier than before.

Great job! Please use MS-222 (Finquel) next time though. Clove oil stops their breathing & can cause permanent brain damage.

Are you feeding shelled food also? I heard with feeding foods shell on it will make it so you don't have to trim them.

Unless 90% of a SAP's food is snails, they will always need their teeth trimmed every 4-6 months. Worst fish for needing dentistry.

Ebay or Drs Foster & Smith.
