In my 20 long I have a Ludwigia plant which is growing very nicely. I noticed roots growing out of the stalks recently. Can I cut the plant under the roots and re-plant??

Here are pics of the roots

So you want to cut it from under where the roots are starting to grow, why there, for looks or just because you thought it would have a better chance?
Well All plants are different, some you can cut all you like and they do fine and the trimming become plants and the original grows again, others when you cut them the top portion of the original cut wont grow anymore and it will just grow new branches from the sides instead.

I say try it you will never know until you try you can defiantly get 2 plants from the one by trimming the top, its just that sometimes the bottom one might not grow from the top anymore, although i have aquatic plant keepers say otherwise, saying you can cut almost every aquatic plant from the top you just have to have a very sharp pair of scissors. So get a very sharp Pair of scissors and cut it. Hope that helps, if you have anymore questions ask away.

The reason I said I wanted to cut there, because I figured since roots are growing out of the side of the plant, if I cut under those roots and re-plant, the clipping would have a better chance of growing. Is this correct?

Not really, i mean i dont know personly how hardy Ludwigia is but i'm pretty sure they are hardly. You can just cut the tip top with half an inch of stem and replant it and it should grow, you can cut branches and it would grow, the roots dont really effect it chances because well it will probably grow no matter what(it just way get started a tiny tad faster). I started out with 1 plant and now i have over 20 i trim the tops when they get to tall and replant them, i do the same to some branches. I had this really hardy plant that one time i was trimming and i accidently cut a leaf in half, i'm not kidding you a root grew out of the half of that leaf and started a new plant, i was amazed but that was a realy hardly plant, haha. Just trim away and replant and you will get yourself a few new plants, like i said trim anywhere, the bigger the stem left on the trimming the faster it will get going. And sometimes the orginal may not grow from the top portion but it will branch out anyway. Use very sharp scissors it will help the orignal recover faster and allow it to continue from where the trimming was, lously scizzzors leaves scars and the original plant might not grow where it was trimmed.

Narrow leaf Ludwigia can just be clipped and re-planted. It doesn't really matter if there are roots present or not, the plant will still grow.
