Hey guys, wanted to get my 120g (4x2x2) up and running again. I definitely want a male Green Terror, was thinking Jack Dempsey and A. lyonsi to round out the trio. Tank would be heavily filtered with 80% water changes done weekly. I have never kept a Lyonsi so I’m not sure if this could work, I did keep a Midas in a 120g and never thought of keeping anything with him, he was really aggressive. What are your thoughts? Thanks guys

Never kept a Lyonsi but kept some JDs and a green terror, the first JD I had was a killer and would kill anything in sight but the second one was very mellow and could live with swordtails and other cichlids. The green terror was mellow but would protect his territory. With a trio of big cichlids like that it can work but it comes down to the individual fish. I would add the least aggressive fish first, probably the green terror and let him establish a territory and then add the lyonsi and then the JD. You would probably need a lot of things to break up the line of sight and maybe some dither fish. It could work or it could not but you don’t know until you try.

Hey thanks for the advice! I will definitely scape the tank for closed site lines and try to give each of them a place to go. If I can’t find a Lyonsi I was thinking a female Nicaraguan but I am open to any other suggestions! Thanks

A Nicaraguan could also work although they would be smaller than the others, maybe a male or pair would be better.

Eh it's hit or miss with a mix like that in a 4 foot tank. You'd need some luck to get it to work long term IMO. Lyonsi aren't as bad as midas, but can still be pretty mean. Better chance with a pair of your favorite species. But, can give it a shot if you want, I'd keep another tank running and a divider on hand.

Would a GT and a JD have a better chance for success with some dither/target fish? If so, I’m not a fan of Silver Dollars at all , any suggestions would be good. If not I’ll give the original Trio a try. Thanks for the help

Trios rarely work out, the two strongest will bully the weakest, once that's gone then the most dominant will target the next. In a tank that size a pair of any of the fish you suggested would work out well. Personally I would go for a pair of lyonsi, will more then fill the tank out once full grown.
