First let me state that I know they cannot be kept together because Frontosa is more of a protein diet and Tropheus is more of a vegi diet.

This will be my first Cichlid tank so I want to do it correctly.

The tank is a 150 gallon 72” long.

I wanted to keep a few Synodontis (2-3 petricola and 1-2 decorus) in the tank as well. I am debating between going Tropheus or Frontosa. What other Cichlids can be kept with either of them or is it more of those are the only species in the tank kind of thing?

Which one also would be a better one to start out with?
I have had the tank for over a year now with community fish (I know they have to go). The substrate is Crushed Coral and there is a lot of Texas Holey Rock in there. I need to get the exact PH measures but with those items in there it should be decently high. I have a API liquid test kit, so getting the results won’t be a problem.

Thanks in advance!

Personally, I'm a purist and think that frontosa should be kept with frontosa. Some folks will keep C. moori with them, but I think that the activity level of the haps will bug the fronts. Jumbo cyps (with a solid headstart on growth from the fronts) are another option.

Common companions for tropheus are another species of tropheus, petrichromis, gobies or simochromis.

Personally, I'd lean towards the herbivorous tank... more action and variety.

Watch out for aggression between multiple decorus synos. It can be bad. Mine is in the 180 and about 8" long and will not tolerate and larger synos (we're talking violent fighting). If you want to try, get them all small and grow them up together. Provide enough caves so that every cat has their own spot.

trophs will nip the fins of the cyphos, frontosa are very skittish , trophs on the other hand seem to be very active

He said one or the other.
