Hi all,

I just recently picked up a 55 gallon tank. I am having trouble figuring out how I want to stock it. The only thing that’s really in my mind is a small colony of Duboisi.

I have a ton of experience keeping aquariums but I don’t have any experience with this species.
Does anyone think if I got a small young colony (8-10?) and put in a bunch of dithers that it’s possible?

What is the footprint? Looks 36x18”. Maybe just pic. That variant might work, little less aggro compared to their variants but would still stick to one male, maybe 6-8 females.
As far as dithers, only fish they will focus on is each other, dithers will be useless with trophs.

Actually it is a 48” x 13”.

I actually have someone offering me a group of 15 red bulu points for $150 and while they are smaller I don’t want the headache of losing/rehoming fish if I don’t have to and it seems less likely for this group to work.

I will be running to filters. A tetra HOB and one of those Chinese canister filter rated at 260 gph I believe. I plan to run the job with carbon and the canister with mostly poly floss and biomedia.
Thoughts?

Bulu points are more aggressive, I would pass on those fish for a 55 gallon set up. IMO a recipe for disaster, especially if they turn out to be heavy in males. It’s doable with bi-weekly water changes, maybe , but …..a smaller group of the duboisi would be better suited in this tank. As far as filtration, tropheus come from the surf zone, lots of surface agitation and higher 02 levels are good.

Thanks for the info, I will steer clear of the bulu points for this set up. I may still try to do the duboisi.
Do you have any other suggestions as far as other stocking ideas? My experience with African Cichlids is pretty limited compared to other species and genus .

You want stocking alternatives to tropheus? Staying with Lake Tanganyika or any African cichlid?
