Hey all. I was at the LFS today doing my weekly check-in and they had a ton of new tropheus species in. I decided that I want to do a tropheus tank. I have a few question first to make sure they are for me.

What size tank would be best?
How many in the tank?
Can you mix species or is that a bad idea?
What type of decor do they prefer?

Any other intricacies with this fish would help too. I would assume that water param's are the same as any other Tang's. Correct??

Tropheus need atleast a 4foot 75G. Minimal rocks or decor to prevent territories. From my experience they must be crowded in to spread aggression. They can cross breed and the group in the majority will eventually kill the group in the minority. These suggestions are from personal experience. Good luck.

I agree with both the above posts. You will find that there are MANY ways to keep tropheus. I agree with nothing below a 75 gallon. Keep them in groups of at least 15 fish. I would not mix variants at all. They need a high veggie diet, try to keep protiens low. You will also want to have high quality water, therefore you will need to do large water changes every week, do at least 50% a week, I personally do more. I personally rock my tropheus tanks heavily, but my larger colonies are wild caught and seem to prefer it that way.

it depends on if your ok with cramming fish into a small tank or not, id say a group of 15+
in a 6ft is the way to go

6ft is the best way to go but 4 foot will work, not everyone can afford a 6ft and it is not a MUST.

Ok, so I need a decent sized tank. Would a 4foot 60 gal. do? Also, My lfs sell them for $25 each. Is that a good price. Reason I ask is that If I got 15 fish at $25 a piece, well, thats a good chunk of change. Where is a good place to buy them online? Thanks for the help.
