southern Spain (Costa del sol area) and I want to have a pond outside. The pond would be 2000 to 5000 gallons and contain fish such as red tail catfish, arowanas etc. In the summer months Costa del sol is perfect for keeping these kind of fish outdoors but in the winter the temperature drops to around 48 Fahrenheit (at the lowest). It usually staying around 60 Fahrenheit in the winter months. How many months would I need a heater and any advice ? Costa del sol is around 2500 miles from the equator

I would look for Spanish fish forums that might have a bit more insight for you. You'll still be limited to the types of fish you can keep outdoors.

This came up a while back. Someone wanted to use a mini-lake / gigantic pond in Garland Texas (which is really only 5 F cooler than Costa del Sol in December and January.) Costa del Sol averages 54 F in December and January. Garland Texas averages around 49 F.

Generally speaking, quoting people who have kept similar or the same fish, in conditions like that: "don't do it." If you have unlimited funds, sure, you can do it, but it's not a good plan for fish like those for almost anyone else.

I'd choose fish that handle cold water, or much chillier conditions.

Certainly, you'd be able to stock some cold water fish that would be amazing.
