bo'ness scotland
today i went into my local tropical trade centre, i guess they sell to pet store because of the sheer numbers of fish. i have bought a few fish in the past with no problems and no concerns.

TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS LIKE THE LITTLE PET SHOP OF HORRORS.

Dead fish on the carpet. a tank of baby clown knifefish all dead. a 'mixed' cichlid tank looked like a pack of wolves feeding. few tanks with treatments. but the icing on the cake was stumbled upon by my mrs; four or five SHELVES of cups. all with siamese fighter. we recon about 200 in total. QUITE A FEW WERE DEAD!!!!!!!

THIS HAS MADE ME BLOODY ANGRY!

IF YOU STAY IN SCOTLAND PLEASE DO NOT USE 'TROPICAL TRADE CENTRE' IN CAMELON FALKIRK.

thanks for your time

I will keep this in mind, I have been venturing around various pet stores lately looking for new places with good fish. Still can't beat strictly Aquatics in Kirkcaldy in my opinion.

Also if you fancy any 5 Spot Jewel Cichlids let me know mines have bread and today the eggs have hatched. Not all of them but about 60 or so. I have a grow out tank ready for when they are free swimming.

Sad but true. thats what the distributor is like anywhere. You have to take in mind that its a business that deals in time. Get the fish in, get them back out. Thats how its run. You'd probably be a little shocked to go into any LFS at the moment they open and see the amount of dead fish before they're tossed to the carnivores or trash. Thank the maker that at least some of these guys find happy homes with us.

have you been up to cupar?? ultimate aquatics they're good but there is a garden centre right next door thats better, well in my opinion. 'the aquarium' in falkirk is where i buy all my fish from. always has good specialist stock. I HATE PETS AT HOME!!! hate the way they talk to you. next time im over that way i'll give strictly aquatics a look.

as for your jewels....... ive got fish coming out of everywhere. no room for more fish for the time being.

My good lfs has sadly closed down, the other place near by that sells fish amongst other things occasionally has some interesting stuff in (got a baby gkf : ) !!!) but they always used to keep the bettas in cups , i got two for the misses, they were in such bad shape they both died very quickly. They have finaly started keeping them in them in tanks with other tropical fish

fish in cups is terrible. im so angry about it. im thinking of writing to 'practial fish keepers!', surely this cant be common practice of fish traders? i mean if it was puppies in cups there would be hell to pay.

You gata think of it from the business point of view, Bettas sell fast because anyone can keep them and they are pretty so why waste tank space on smaller $3 fish that dont NEED the filtration and airation that the other fish do. Unfortunately most of them will go in vases without filtration or anything like that. To most people they are "just fish" so the general public wont make a fuss about them in cups. :( It's sad but it's how things go.

bettas in the cups was the tip on the iceberg! really makes me wonder what else we dont see. this is generally a trade centre, i guess for internet or other fish shops so they dont do much public trade but the place was a disgrace. i'd quite like to get into breeding and fish sales and i'd hate to think this is common place or acceptable.

see when people try and tell me ITS ONLY FISH i wanna give them a shake. ive got thousands of pounds worth of stuff, between fish and kit. my friend was looking after my fish while i was on holiday, long story short she was gonna have to gey a locksmith to get back in my flat.... anyway no one could understand her panic over some fish, thinking there was a couple of goldfish. some people a thick.
