Hi!

I want some info of tropical gars, cant find so much on the internet...
How big can they get in a tank?
How fast do they grow?
Are they easier/harder to keep compared to other gars? (I ardy have a florida gar)
How long can I keep a 10" tropical in a 150 gal tank?

More info is welcome!

Thanks!

honestly....anyways, do a search on here and www.aquaticpredators.com there is seriously tonnes of info about tropical gars.

they can get 24" and up

very generalised estimation: 14-18" first year, 20" second yr, 23" up 3rd yr onwards

best gar to keep in terms of stability

roughly 1-2years

This is a one life opportunity for me here in Sweden to get my hands on a tropical gar, but I cant get a bigger tank at the moment or in the next couple of years....

How big tank would you recomend for these fish?

one of the first threads on Gar i ever read before I got one, was by you ,Xander, about this subject,I like the very generalised very much!
The info proved usefull and made me decide I could get a Spotted.(,that was actually a Florida of course.:D)
Thanx!

xander is good! but what is the demensions of ur tank? that would help! it will take them a while to get above 2 ft.
oh and msjinkzd has a nice one that is gettin pretty big. she can help with growth rates.

Oh.. forgot about that. Its 150*60*60cm or 5*2*2 feet.

Alrdy have asian arowana, geos and bichirs in the tank. So will have to do a tank upgrade in the future anyhow... but dont know when i can. Have so much in school, and must wait till I have a place of my own.

that would work for awhile. BUT aro can sometimes be bad tank mates. if you dont have another tank ready u might not want to get it

get it, imo. i have been trying to get one for over 2 years and still no luck. worst case scenario, you cant house it anymore, just send it my way:P

how big is the trop now? if it's a lightly stocked 150 you could pull it off till it's about 20", but after that it be a close replica of my disastrous first attemt at keeping a cuban gar(well, asides from the crappy water, overstocked, undersized tank and unstable pH...). look up at "infblue" on ap, he currently has 2 21-23inch trops in a 5.5'x34"x2.5' tank. they look monster as heck. and i think he documented their growth pretty well, you could try getting a growth rate off there. or go read up on jordon(demjor)'s old threads, he documented the growth of his t-gar well on here, and he had it in a 6*2*2, which would roughly be the same as yours as it's not the 5' length you should be worried about, rather the 2' width. trop gars get about as bulky and stout as cubans so an inflexible(larger gars are much less flexible than small ones) 22" fish in a 24" wide tank could be asking for serious trouble. if all else fails, pm solomon(e_americanus) if he doesnt chime in here, of look up richard. think i have his email somewhere or other....they will be able to tell you what you need to know. but obviously, do enough reading first before calling it a day and pming them.

haha! Thanks man. Ya, what I said, this may be the only chans for me to get my hands on one. So I think I'll give it a try. If it wont work I just get rid of it. But dont think there should be any problems w tank mates.
Hope I'll have a tank big enough when it reach big size. Or else I sell it to any of my friends w bigger tanks.

Its a beautiful fish.

Are they harder to get on none-live food than other gars..? Got my frlorida gar on dead after 2 weeks or so.
