Louisiana
This is a question I have wondered for a while and just decided to go ahead and ask. I am not planning a pond build anytime in the near future just would like to know the answer to this.

I live in Louisiana, would increasing the depth on a pond let tropical fish survive the winter?, deeper water equals warmer water or is this just false.information. if it is true how deep are we talking, 20 - 30 ft? I am of course thinking of without a heater

Thanks for answering these questions of mine in advance. Our winters are generally mild with only a couple weeks maybe a month tops below freezing but still too cold for tropical fish, just a thought I had and wanted to run the question by mfk and see what the verdict is

I ask because I know the bass in this area generally head to deeper water during the colder.months, so it must be a little warmer but how deep would it take to reach tropical temps? Or is it even possible, I doubt its feasible just wanted to know if it can or can't be done

When I had my Bala pond (I live in Cali) I only made my pond 2feet cause it was easyer to heat am not sure about where you live cause it freezes over just me 2cents. Oh and I would use 4, 300WATT heaters.

im no pond expert im only 13 but if you did like a 2 foot pond like zfishies said it would be easier to heat because if you build a 20 30 foot pond it wil never be around 72 degrees and what kind of filtration would you use? btw i live in new england and would love to have a tropical pond

Well the main reason I would be looking to do a tropical pond I. The distant future would be for my tsn. Which means it would need to be wide, long and some depth couldn't be a bad thing either, and was really just seeing if heating that large of a pond could be avoided. In the summertime a heater wouldn't be necessary because it stays in the 90's but this is all for a hypothetical pond in the distant future.

I will say if I build a pond like that and do decide to heat it I will throw my cichla in as well. It would be awesome. The pond would have to be in the thousands of gallons but like I said I am not planning a pond build or anything at the moment just looking for information

But it is beginning to sound like the pond would have to be 100 foot deep to stay in tropical temps during the winter and well let's be honest, that's just not realistic.

But maybe a well insulated massive pond with a greenhouse type enclosure over it would be great, see now I have started trying to design my ideal pond, here we go lol

im in the middle of building a koi in my back yard its like 15x5x4ft and i would love to heat it in the winter so i could get a red tai l but i dont know what the electric bill would be. my parents probaly wont like it

And in my original post I wanted to clarify that combining all the days we have that get below freezing rarely would add up to 2 weeks but the main point was it does freeze from time to time.
