hey.....i've been wondering....how many true gars a there out....i mean....there are all those fake ones and there the real ones....how many true gars exist>?

the fake gars are the ones called needlenose, hujeta gar, marbled gar, rocket gar etc. they are usually pike-characins

there are only 7 species of true gar, plus a couple hybrids

Lepisosteus platostomus - shortnose
L. oculatus - spotted
L. platyrhincus - florida
L. osseus - longnose

Atractosteus tropicus - tropical
A. tristoechus - cuban
A. spatula - alligator

hybrids:
crocodile gar Type I : shortnose x alligator
crocodile gar Type II : spotted OR florida x alligator

the word 'true' really shouldn't be tagged on. Gars are gars, and there are only 7 species of them (plus a couple hybrids). period. the only reason is because of the stupid common names given to those pike-characins, calling them 'gars' when in fact they are NOT gars. for ease of discussion, therefore, sometimes people specify 'true' vs. 'fake'

now theres sumthing we shld all agree on

One could add a couple more hybrids which may occur in nature however they are pretty much non existant in the hobby:

Longnosed X alligator
Shortnosed X longnosed
Spotted X longnosed

More research needs to be done on wild hybridization
