I stumbled on to this photo-stream on Flickr. It is titled ‘Argentinean fish’ and has various fish throughout the pages. Of Particular interest though, is the ray tagged as P. Hystrix. Considering its assumed source, Is this the ray species originally described in Buenos Aires as P. Hystrix?

The P. Motoro looking ray in this photo-stream is very interesting as well…Seems to have a combination of Motoro like spotting, and what ‘Hystrix’ like patterning. (the Hystrix looks to be buried in the top left of this pic) Can it be an un-described species? Or simply a variant?

Coincidentally, a recent thread on roggenforum explores this same possibility with a few different examples. The rays shown look to be similar, if not the same–

Thoughts?

Well the 1st picture looks like a Retic (brain pattern).

The 2nd Pic is a nice shot of a Moto but the ray you are questioning is too buried to really make out.

3rd Pic...if it weren't for the absence of bars on the tail I'd say that is a Tiger (P. Menchacai). I don't think it's a Tigrinus (P. Castexi sp.) because of the lack of polkadots on the disc margin. But! It is very similar to photos of Argentinian P. Hystrix that were imported by the Glasser Aquarium in Germany. According to Aqualog, this being the case since Argentina is the originating area of discription, the Rio Negro Brazilian Hystrix may in fact be an undescribed species.

pretty sure these are the real deal hystrix.

the brazil hystrix that we call true hystrix rely has no scientific name yet...

not sure if there has been any updates on this yet but this was talked about at the symposium.

Going into the flickr photostream, there are also pics of retics. I gather (yes..assume) that these may be pics from a collection trip, or for study, or for a hobbyist...regardless...one would presume that this being a person in Argentina, they are naming the fish as known to them.

The Motoro looking ray is interesting as well...any thoughts on that one?

yes, that is the "real hystrix" however what the hobby calls true hystrix is the brazilian hystrix, it is actually called curru ray by the locals

x3 on the label
