Firstly I would like to say Hello everybody I am new here :)
My idea is to have a mixed tank that really is mixed, fish from different continents families water types, I have a 225 gallon tank thats currently being resealed (by myself) just awaiting on the new glass to come for the broken side piece.

I couldnt resist the urge to buy the first guy for my tank today so I got a fish I've been after for a long time Champsochromis Caeruleus, just a single 3" specimin that is living in a 60g african tank until I am done with my larger tank.

He is doing fine and eating well minding his own business, he will be the first in my mixed tank. I am thinking of adding SA cichlids (larger kinds that wont be overly aggressive) aswell as some characin and catfish, maybe an anabantoid also.
I spent a while searching for a fish to ocupy the top levels of the tank that I really wanted and now I finally have him.

Any suggestions, comments, ideas for my Mixed tank?

Well you kind of shot yourself in the foot by getting a Lake malawi cichlid, requiring hard water and alkaline water. Going to be hard to find fish from other continents that are big enough and able to hold their own agaisnt this large cichlid, but also has the same parameter requirements.

I currently have guppies, platies, corydoras and africans in a 150 with a mix of crushed coral and gravel and all thrive in the hard water, I was concerned for the corydoras but they survived up to now one year w/o problems the four africans do not bother the livebearers at all.

Survive and thrive have 2 drastically different meanings

I have a firm belief that fish can be mixed especially because all tank bread fish are easily adaptable too different water conditions. I'vedone it in the past I'm doing it again and I made this thread for ideas to. My tank not to start a debate. On mixing. Its an experiment and I wont do anythin cruel. If afish. Isn't doing well ill remove it.

Thanks in advance strato

For Mr survive and thrive if the fish eat and swim, and breed I say they are not only surviving but thriving at one year out so with NO Losses I would say they are there.

I agree jft :)

Thank you I personally cannot understand some people who make comments without KNOWING what they speak about Peace

What predatory characins do you reccomend ? I like the Leporinus but I hear they have a reputation of killing even the toughest fish
