Trumpet Snails? Anaerobic Pockets?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i've heard of people using them with sand substrate for the extra protection of always stirring it up. I've never had them before, but i've heard they're a great clean up crew as well

I have a Ton of them in my tanks, They are doing a great job with sand substrate, I don't know if my loaches feed on them or not but i recommend using them

I have them in my cichlid tank and I've had no problems with the substrate. They will only over populate if you are over feeding. I never see mine unless it's after dark. They stay in the sand all day.

How deep is your sand bed? they are good for 1-2" but deeper than that you may still have to manually disrupt pockets.

Just curious..
Have seen allot of posts about the dangers of a deep sand bed, but has anyone had their tank go sour by one?
I know the “baddies” can grow in the anaerobic environment, that is a fact.
Just like a poorly maintained canister that has the power off for a time, read as little as an hour.
But what I would like, is any first hand, it happened to my tank occurrences of your tank being adversely effected by the escape of methane or hydrogen sulfide.

I too have heard quite a bit about a DSB being a problem, but with good circulation the top layer moves ever so slightly, and agitation by bottom dwelling fish move it a hair deeper, and the trumpet snails seem to be doing a very good job in my tank as far as i can tell. i dont test for the gasses or HS in the water, however i have seen an impacted sand bed and i can see that mine is not...
