I was at the LFS today talking to them about my Hairy Puffer, and they recommended that I put Trumpet Snails in with her. They said it would be good food for her. They gave me about 6 of them. Are these good food for my Hairy Puffer? I have now read that they hide under the substrate all day (they have already started burrowing into the sand), so will she even eat them?

Nope, Malaysian Trumpet snails is not advisable for trimming the puffer's beak/teeth. The shell is really hard unlike the ramshorn, pond and apple snails.

Thanks. After I posted the question, I found two sources saying the same thing you said. I was able to sift them out of the sand and remove them from the tank. I think I got all of them.

PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A MISINFORMED LFS.....:screwy:

Cool i think i remember pwimin saying something about a LFS haveing a hairy puffer did they have any other puffers ?

I would definatly look for rams horn snails i found some in a tiny pond near my house but there barried under masses of common pond snails which also wouldn't be to bad for puffers i've got like 4-6 in my wolffish tank but they aren't breeding at all like i thought they would if i can get alot more and clean them up and get them breeding i could pass some off to you

In fact i think i'm gonna go and see if i can get some more today they were there last year so it seems they can survive the winter so there population should only go up and the pond there in doesn't go any where so theres not much of a threat of them invadeing any thing

Every puffer needs hard-shelled foods to eat or their teeth will need trimming eventually.
